Gyms are shared spaces with shared equipment. Towel etiquette isn't just politeness - it's basic hygiene.
The Fundamental Rule
Bring a towel. Use it. Wipe equipment after use.
Most gyms require this. All should.
Why It Matters
Sweat contains:
- Bacteria (lots of it)
- Salt and minerals
- Dead skin cells
- Whatever was on your skin
Leaving this on equipment for the next person is unpleasant at best, infection risk at worst.
The Two-Towel System
For optimal hygiene, bring two towels:
- Equipment towel: Place on benches/machines before use. Wipe equipment after use.
- Personal towel: Wipe your own face and body during workout.
This prevents:
- Your sweat transferring to equipment
- Equipment sweat transferring to your face/body
- Cross-contamination
With microfibre, two small towels barely take more space than one cotton towel.
What to Do
Before Using Equipment
Place towel on any surface you'll contact - bench, seat, mat.
During Use
Use your personal towel for wiping your own sweat.
After Use
Wipe all contact surfaces with your equipment towel. Spray with provided disinfectant if available.
On the Gym Floor
Never leave towel on equipment to "reserve" it while you're elsewhere. This is universally disliked.
Common Mistakes
Using your shirt instead of a towel: Doesn't count. Your shirt is already sweaty.
Forgetting to wipe: Pay attention. Make it automatic.
Draping towel to save equipment: Unacceptable. Use it or lose it.
Using the same towel for face and equipment: Cross-contamination.
Not bringing a towel at all: Just don't.
Gym-Specific Tips
Mat exercises: Place towel where your face contacts the mat.
Weight benches: Towel on the bench, wipe after.
Cardio machines: Wipe handles, console, and any contact points.
Swimming: Separate towel for poolside and locker room.
Towel Care for Gym Use
- Wash after EVERY gym session
- Don't leave damp in gym bag (bacteria love this)
- Hang to dry immediately when you get home
- Use sports detergent if odour persists
What to Bring
Size: 40x80cm works for most. Large enough to cover bench, small enough to fit in bag.
Material: Microfibre. Quick-dry, compact, affordable.
Quantity: Two if using the two-towel system.
Backup: Keep a spare in your locker or car.
If You Forget Your Towel
- Many gyms sell or rent towels
- Paper towels are better than nothing for equipment
- Don't be the person who uses nothing
The Bottom Line
Bring a towel. Use it on equipment. Wipe after use. Wash after every gym visit.
This isn't complicated. It's just basic respect for shared space.
