How to Store Towels Properly

Proper storage keeps towels fresh, prevents musty smells, and extends their lifespan.

Key Principles

1. Completely Dry

Never store damp towels. Even slight moisture leads to:

  • Mildew growth
  • Musty odours
  • Bacterial buildup

If in doubt, leave out longer.

2. Good Ventilation

Towels need air circulation:

  • Open shelving is ideal
  • Avoid sealed plastic containers
  • Don't pack too tightly
  • Wire shelving allows airflow

3. Cool and Dry Location

Avoid:

  • Humid bathrooms (for storage)
  • Direct sunlight (fading)
  • Near heat sources
  • Damp cupboards

Folding for Storage

Consistent folding:

  • Looks neat
  • Fits shelves efficiently
  • Makes rotation easier
  • Prevents deep creases

See our folding guide for techniques.

Rotation System

Use oldest towels first:

  • Stack new towels at bottom/back
  • Take from top/front
  • Prevents some towels ageing unused

Linen Cupboard Tips

Do:

  • Leave space between stacks
  • Group by type (bath, hand, face)
  • Use shelf dividers if needed
  • Check periodically for mustiness

Don't:

  • Cram in too many
  • Store on damp floor
  • Mix with heavily scented items
  • Forget about back corners

Long-Term Storage

For seasonal or guest towels:

  • Wash before storing
  • Ensure bone dry
  • Use breathable containers (cotton bags, not plastic)
  • Add lavender sachets (optional)
  • Check annually

Bathroom Storage

For daily-use towels in the bathroom:

  • Open shelves or towel rails
  • Ensure bathroom ventilates after showers
  • Rotate regularly
  • Don't store large quantities in humid bathroom
