If your towels smell bad even after washing, bacteria survived the laundry cycle. Here's why that happens and how to fix it.
Common Causes
Temperature Too Low
Washing at 30°C doesn't kill bacteria effectively. Many survive and continue producing odour in "clean" towels.
Fix: Wash towels at 40-60°C. Hotter water sanitises better.
Overloaded Machine
Too many towels packed in means water and detergent can't circulate properly. Some areas don't get cleaned; bacteria survive in protected spots.
Fix: Smaller loads. Fill the drum no more than 75%.
Fabric Softener Buildup
Fabric softener coats fibres with residue that traps bacteria and organic matter. The buildup accumulates over months, creating a sealed bacterial environment.
Fix: Stop using fabric softener entirely. Strip towels to remove existing buildup.
Left Damp After Washing
Leaving washed towels in the machine for hours - or overnight - allows bacteria to recolonise immediately. All your washing effort is undone.
Fix: Dry towels immediately after washing.
Incomplete Drying
If towels don't fully dry before use or storage, remaining moisture supports bacterial growth. The cycle continues.
Fix: Ensure towels are completely dry. Tumble dry or line dry with good airflow.
How to Fix Smelly "Clean" Towels
Quick Fix: Hot Vinegar Wash
- Load smelly towels
- Add 1 cup white vinegar to the drum
- Wash on hottest setting with NO detergent
- Run a second wash with detergent, no vinegar
- Dry immediately and completely
The vinegar breaks down residue and kills bacteria. The second wash removes any remaining vinegar and debris.
Deep Fix: Laundry Stripping
For persistent smell that vinegar doesn't solve:
- Fill bathtub with very hot water
- Add 1/4 cup borax + 1/4 cup washing soda + 1/2 cup detergent
- Submerge towels completely
- Soak 4-6 hours, stirring occasionally
- Watch the water turn disgusting (that's buildup leaving)
- Wring out and wash normally
- Dry completely

Prevention
- Wash at 40-60°C
- Don't overload the machine
- Never use fabric softener
- Dry immediately after washing
- Ensure complete drying between uses
- Use appropriate amount of detergent (not too much)
When to Replace
If towels still smell after stripping and proper washing:
- Bacteria may be established deep in worn fibres
- Permanent mildew damage
- Time for new towels
Start fresh with new towels and proper care habits to prevent recurrence.
