Stiff, scratchy towels are a common problem with several possible causes - all fixable.
Common Causes
1. Detergent Buildup
Using too much detergent leaves residue that:
- Coats fibres
- Stiffens fabric
- Attracts more dirt
- Builds up over time
Fix: Use less detergent. Modern machines and detergents need less than you think.
2. Fabric Softener
Ironically, fabric softener makes towels worse over time:
- Waxy coating builds up
- Reduces absorbency
- Creates stiffness
- Traps odours
Fix: Stop using fabric softener on towels immediately.
3. Hard Water
Mineral deposits (calcium, magnesium) accumulate on fibres:
- Creates rough texture
- Stiffens fabric
- Dulls colours
Fix: Add vinegar to rinse cycle, or use water softener.
4. Line Drying
Air-dried towels often feel stiffer because:
- Fibres dry flat rather than fluffed
- No tumbling action to separate pile
- Minerals set in place
Fix: Tumble dry briefly after line drying, or shake vigorously.
5. Over-Drying
Excessive heat damages fibres:
- Makes them brittle
- Reduces softness
- Causes stiffness
Fix: Remove towels while slightly damp, or use lower heat.
How to Fix Hard Towels
Quick Fix: Vinegar Wash
- Wash towels in hot water with 1 cup white vinegar (no detergent)
- Run second wash with normal detergent
- Tumble dry
Deep Fix: Laundry Stripping
For severely affected towels, strip them:
- Fill tub with hot water
- Add borax, washing soda, and detergent
- Soak 4-6 hours
- Wash and dry normally
See our complete stripping guide.
Prevention
- Use less detergent
- Never use fabric softener
- Add vinegar to rinse monthly
- Tumble dry (at least briefly)
- Don't over-dry
When Towels Can't Be Saved
Very old, heavily damaged towels may not recover fully. If stripping doesn't help, it's time for new towels.
