Why Do New Towels Smell?

That distinctive "new towel smell" isn't fresh - it's chemicals. Here's what causes it and how to remove it.

What Causes the Smell

Factory Finishes

New towels are treated with:

  • Sizing agents: Starch-based coatings for weaving
  • Softeners: Make towels feel nice in-store
  • Anti-wrinkle treatments: Keep towels looking good on shelves

Dye Chemicals

The dyeing process leaves residual chemicals that haven't fully washed out.

Packaging

Plastic packaging can transfer odours, especially in warm storage.

Formaldehyde

Some finishes contain formaldehyde resins. Quality certifications (OEKO-TEX) limit these.

Is It Harmful?

For most people, factory finishes are irritating rather than dangerous. However:

  • Sensitive skin may react
  • Allergies can be triggered
  • Chemicals shouldn't contact skin unnecessarily

Always wash before use.

How to Remove the Smell

Basic Wash

  1. Wash new towels before first use
  2. Use normal detergent
  3. Hot water (40-60°C)
  4. Extra rinse cycle helps

For Strong Smells

  1. Soak in cold water overnight
  2. Wash with 1 cup baking soda (no detergent)
  3. Second wash with detergent
  4. Add vinegar to rinse

Persistent Smells

Some very cheap towels have strong chemical odours that take multiple washes to clear. Consider returning if smell persists after 3+ washes.

Prevention When Buying

  • Choose OEKO-TEX certified towels
  • Avoid very cheap imports
  • Unwrap and air out before washing
  • Buy from reputable brands
