Why Do Towels Smell When Wet?

A towel that smells fine dry but stinks when wet still has a bacteria or mildew problem - it's just dormant.

The Science

Dormant Microbes

Bacteria and mildew don't die when towels dry - they go dormant:

  • Metabolic activity stops
  • No odour produced
  • But they're still there

Reactivation

When water returns:

  • Microbes reactivate
  • Metabolism restarts
  • Odour compounds released
  • The smell returns

Why Normal Washing Doesn't Fix It

Regular washing may not eliminate embedded microbes:

  • Water temperature too low
  • Wash time too short
  • Microbes deep in fibres
  • Detergent doesn't sanitise

The towel gets clean on the surface but organisms survive in the fibres.

Solutions

Hot Wash

Wash at 60°C to kill bacteria. Lower temperatures don't sanitise effectively.

Vinegar Treatment

  1. Wash in hot water with 2 cups white vinegar
  2. No detergent
  3. Second wash with detergent

Laundry Stripping

For stubborn cases, strip the towels.

Oxygen Bleach Soak

Soak in hot water with oxygen bleach before washing.

Sunlight

UV light kills bacteria. Dry in direct sunlight after washing.

Prevention

Once fixed, prevent recurrence:

  • Dry towels completely between uses
  • Wash before smell develops
  • Don't leave damp in basket
  • Ensure good bathroom ventilation

When to Replace

If the wet smell returns repeatedly despite treatment:

  • Bacteria is deeply embedded
  • May be mildew in fibres
  • Time for new towels

The Test

After treatment, wet the towel and smell it. If the odour returns, treatment wasn't fully effective - repeat or replace.
