Dobby

Weaving attachment creating small geometric patterns. Simpler than jacquard. Common for towel borders.

Dobby refers to a loom attachment that allows small, geometric patterns to be woven into fabric. Simpler and cheaper than jacquard weaving.

How It Works

A dobby mechanism controls groups of warp threads (rather than individual threads like jacquard). This allows:

  • Small geometric patterns
  • Textured stripes
  • Repeating designs
  • Subtle decorative elements

Limitations

Dobby weaving cannot create:

  • Complex pictorial designs
  • Large-scale patterns
  • Detailed imagery

For those, jacquard weaving is required.

In Towels

Dobby weaving is most commonly seen in dobby borders - the decorative stripe near towel edges. This adds:

  • Visual interest
  • Quality appearance
  • Edge reinforcement
  • Brand identity

Dobby vs Jacquard

Dobby Jacquard
Simple patterns Complex patterns
Geometric only Pictorial possible
Less expensive More expensive
Faster weaving Slower weaving

Dobby vs Cam

Cam borders are even simpler - plain stripes with no pattern. Dobby borders have small geometric designs within the stripe.
