Fading

Loss of colour intensity over time from washing, sun exposure, or chemical damage. Better dyes resist fading longer.

Fading is the gradual loss of colour intensity in dyed textiles, caused by various factors including washing, sunlight, and chemicals.

Causes

Washing:

  • Detergent action
  • Friction between items
  • Hot water (can release dye)
  • Repeated cycles

Sunlight:

  • UV breaks down dyes
  • Affects hung/displayed towels
  • Worse for some colours

Chemicals:

  • Bleach (chlorine damage)
  • Harsh cleaning products
  • Pool chlorine

Preventing Fading

  • Wash in cool/warm water (not hot)
  • Turn inside out (reduces friction)
  • Avoid direct sunlight for drying
  • Use colour-safe detergent
  • Never use chlorine bleach on colours
  • Wash similar colours together

Quality Factor

Fade resistance depends on:

  • Dye type (reactive dyes fade less)
  • Dye application quality
  • Fibre type
  • Colour (some fade more)

Premium towels with quality dyeing fade less.

When Fading Is Normal

Some fading over years is normal. Excessive fading in months indicates:

  • Poor dye quality
  • Improper care
  • Defective product
