Hem

Finished edge of a towel, folded and stitched. Double-turned hems indicate quality construction.

Hem refers to the finished edges at the top and bottom of a towel - where the fabric is folded and stitched to prevent fraying.

Types

Single hem: Fabric folded once, stitched. Basic finish.

Double-turned hem: Fabric folded twice, then stitched. Encases raw edge completely. Standard for quality towels.

Rolled hem: Narrow rolled edge. Less common on towels.

Quality Indicator

Check the hem for:

  • Tight, even stitching: Consistent thread, no loose ends
  • Double-turned: Shows quality construction
  • Straight edges: No puckering or waviness
  • Secure corners: No weak points

Sloppy hems often indicate overall construction shortcuts.

Hem vs Selvage

  • Hem: Top and bottom edges (cut and finished)
  • Selvage: Side edges (finished during weaving)

Dobby/Cam Borders

Decorative borders (dobby, cam) are often positioned near the hem, creating a finished appearance that includes the hem area.
