Hemp

Natural fibre from cannabis plant. Strong, antimicrobial, eco-friendly. Rarely used alone in towels; sometimes blended.

Hemp is a natural fibre derived from the Cannabis sativa plant (industrial hemp, not marijuana). It's one of the oldest cultivated fibres, with genuine environmental credentials.

Properties

  • Extremely strong and durable
  • Naturally antimicrobial
  • Softens with washing
  • UV resistant
  • Absorbent
  • Biodegradable

Hemp shares many properties with linen - both are bast fibres from plant stems.

Environmental Benefits

Hemp is genuinely eco-friendly:

  • Grows fast (matures in 3-4 months)
  • Needs little water
  • Requires no pesticides
  • Improves soil health
  • High yield per acre

These aren't marketing claims - hemp is objectively sustainable.

In Towels

Hemp towels are uncommon because:

  • Initially stiff (like linen)
  • More expensive than cotton
  • Limited production infrastructure
  • Consumer unfamiliarity

When used, hemp appears in:

  • Hemp-cotton blends
  • Eco-focused products
  • Kitchen/tea towels

Breaking In

Like linen, hemp textiles are stiff when new and soften dramatically with washing. Patience is required - peak softness may take 10+ washes.

Industrial hemp contains negligible THC and is legal in most countries. Hemp textiles have no psychoactive properties.
