Mildew

Fungal growth on damp fabrics. Causes musty smell and discolouration. Prevented by complete drying.

Mildew is fungal growth that develops on damp fabrics and surfaces. On towels, it causes musty odour and visible discolouration.

Causes

Mildew requires:

  • Moisture (damp towels)
  • Warmth (room temperature)
  • Organic matter (cotton fibres, dead skin)
  • Time (sustained dampness)

Towels that don't dry completely between uses are prime targets.

Signs

  • Musty, earthy smell
  • Grey, pink, or black spots
  • Discolouration
  • Smell persists after washing

Prevention

  • Dry towels completely between uses
  • Ensure good bathroom ventilation
  • Don't leave wet towels bunched
  • Wash regularly
  • Dry immediately after washing

Removal

Light mildew:

  • Hot wash with oxygen bleach
  • Vinegar soak
  • Sunlight exposure (natural bleaching)

Heavy mildew:

  • May require multiple treatments
  • Chlorine bleach on white towels
  • Sometimes towels are beyond saving

vs Bacteria

Mildew and bacteria both cause towel odour but differ:

Mildew Bacteria
Fungal Bacterial
Visible spots Usually invisible
Earthy smell Sour smell
Needs sustained damp Grows faster
