Modal is a type of viscose (rayon) made from beech tree pulp using a modified production process. It's higher quality than standard viscose - stronger, softer, and more stable.
How It Differs
Compared to standard viscose, modal is:
- Stronger: Better wet strength
- Softer: Silkier feel
- More stable: Less shrinkage
- More durable: Longer lasting
The beech wood source and refined processing create a superior fibre.
Properties
- Exceptionally soft and smooth
- Good moisture absorption
- Retains softness after washing
- Takes colour well
- Biodegradable
In Towels
Modal is occasionally blended with cotton in towels to add:
- Extra softness
- Silky feel
- Smooth texture
Pure modal towels are uncommon - the fibre is better suited to clothing than heavy-duty towel use.
Lenzing Modal
The Austrian company Lenzing produces branded modal (Lenzing Modal™) with certified sustainable production. This is considered the quality benchmark.
vs Lyocell
Both are premium regenerated cellulose fibres:
| Aspect | Modal | Lyocell |
|---|---|---|
| Source | Beech wood | Various wood |
| Processing | Modified viscose | Closed-loop solvent |
| Eco impact | Better than viscose | Best |
