Musty describes the stale, mildew-like odour that develops on towels left damp too long. The smell indicates bacterial or mould growth.
Causes
Musty smell develops when:
- Towels don't dry completely between uses
- Towels sit damp in laundry basket
- Towels left in washing machine
- Humid bathroom with poor ventilation
Microorganisms thrive in warm, damp conditions.
The Science
Bacteria and mould produce volatile organic compounds (VOCs) as waste products. These VOCs create the characteristic musty odour.
Prevention
- Spread towels to dry after each use
- Don't leave damp towels bunched
- Ensure bathroom ventilation
- Wash before smell develops
- Dry completely after washing
Fixing Musty Towels
- Hot wash (60°C) with detergent
- Add vinegar to rinse cycle
- Dry completely (tumble dry if possible)
- If persistent: Laundry stripping
For severe cases, the smell may be embedded - replacement might be necessary.
