Nap

Raised fibres on fabric surface creating soft texture. Created by brushing or shearing. Different from pile.

Nap is a raised, fuzzy surface on fabric created by brushing or other finishing processes - distinct from woven pile.

Nap vs Pile

Nap Pile
Created by finishing Created by weaving
Brushed fibres Woven loops
On flat fabric Integral to structure
Can be brushed away Permanent

Creating Nap

Napping (or raising) process:

  1. Flat fabric is passed through rotating brushes
  2. Brushes pull fibres to surface
  3. Creates soft, fuzzy texture

Direction

Napped fabrics have direction - fibres lie one way. Running hand with/against nap feels different.

In Towels

True nap is uncommon in towels (pile is more common), but may appear in:

  • Flannel face cloths
  • Certain finishes
  • Some flat-weave towels
