Polyamide

Synthetic fibre, also known as nylon. Soft, strong, quick-drying. Blended with polyester in microfibre towels.

Polyamide is a synthetic fibre commonly known by the brand name nylon. In towels, it's primarily found in microfibre blends.

Properties

  • Strong and durable
  • Soft and smooth
  • Quick drying
  • Elastic/stretchy
  • Lightweight
  • Resists abrasion

Polyamide is softer than polyester, which is why it's added to microfibre blends.

In Microfibre Towels

Microfibre towels typically blend polyester and polyamide:

Blend Characteristics
80/20 polyester/polyamide Standard, more durable
70/30 polyester/polyamide Softer, more absorbent

Higher polyamide content generally means softer, more absorbent microfibre.

Why It Matters

When comparing microfibre towels, check the blend ratio:

  • More polyamide = softer feel
  • More polyester = more durable, cheaper

Quality microfibre towels often specify the ratio.

Nylon vs Polyamide

Same thing. "Nylon" is the common name (originally a DuPont trademark); "polyamide" is the technical/generic term. European labelling often uses "polyamide."

Environmental Note

Like polyester, polyamide is:

  • Petroleum-derived
  • Not biodegradable
  • Contributes to microplastic pollution

Natural fibre alternatives exist for those concerned.
