Rough

Rough texture from poor quality cotton, improper care, hard water, or natural wear. Different from stiffness.

Rough towels have an unpleasant scratchy or coarse texture - different from stiffness (which is about flexibility, not surface feel).

Causes

Quality:

  • Short-staple cotton (more fibre ends)
  • Poor construction
  • Cheap materials

Care issues:

  • Hard water mineral deposits
  • Over-drying (damages fibres)
  • Bleach damage
  • Fabric softener buildup (paradoxically)

Wear:

  • Fibres broken and frayed
  • Surface degraded
  • End of life
