Sour

Sharp, acidic odour distinct from musty. Often from bacterial growth or detergent residue reacting with skin oils.

Sour towel smell is a sharp, acidic odour - distinct from the earthy "musty" smell. It often indicates bacterial contamination or residue buildup.

Causes

Bacteria: Different bacteria produce different odours. Some create sour rather than musty smells.

Residue: Detergent or fabric softener buildup reacting with body oils.

Left wet: Towels sitting damp in machine or basket.

Incomplete rinsing: Soap residue turning rancid.

Sour vs Musty

Sour Musty
Sharp, acidic Earthy, stale
Often bacterial Often mould
May be residue-related Usually dampness

Solutions

Similar to musty:

  1. Hot wash with detergent
  2. Vinegar in rinse
  3. Complete drying
  4. Laundry stripping if persistent

Extra rinse cycle may help if residue is the cause.

Prevention

  • Don't leave wet towels sitting
  • Adequate detergent (not too much or too little)
  • Complete rinsing
  • Proper drying
