Staple Length

The length of individual cotton fibres. Longer staple = smoother, stronger yarn. Key quality indicator.

Staple length measures the length of individual cotton fibres - the fundamental quality factor for cotton textiles.

Categories

Category Length Quality
Short staple Under 1" (25mm) Basic
Medium staple 1-1.125" (25-28mm) Standard
Long staple (LS) 1.125-1.25" (28-32mm) Good
Extra-long staple (ELS) Over 1.25" (32mm+) Premium

Why It Matters

Longer fibres produce better yarn because:

Fewer joins: Long fibres span more distance, requiring fewer fibres per length of yarn.

Smoother surface: Fewer fibre ends poking out.

Greater strength: Long fibres grip each other better.

Less pilling: Short fibres cause pills; long fibres stay anchored.

Premium Varieties by Staple

  • Egyptian cotton: 1.5"+ (extra-long)
  • Pima/Supima: 1.4"+ (extra-long)
  • Turkish cotton: 1.25"+ (long)
  • Upland cotton: Under 1.125" (short-medium)

Testing

Staple length is measured using standardised methods (HVI testing) during cotton grading. Consumers can't measure it themselves but can rely on variety names as indicators.
