Stiffness

Towels become stiff from residue buildup, hard water deposits, line drying, or poor rinsing. Usually fixable.

Stiffness in towels - a crunchy, rough texture instead of soft fluffiness - results from various causes, most of which are fixable.

Causes

Residue buildup:

  • Detergent not fully rinsed
  • Fabric softener coating
  • Body oils accumulated

Hard water:

  • Mineral deposits on fibres
  • Calcium and magnesium

Drying method:

  • Line drying (fibres dry matted)
  • Over-drying in tumble dryer

Manufacturing:

  • Sizing/finishing residue (new towels)

Solutions

For residue:

  • Laundry stripping
  • Hot vinegar wash
  • Extra rinse cycles
  • Less detergent

For hard water:

  • Water softener
  • Washing soda in laundry
  • Vinegar rinse

For line drying:

  • Shake vigorously before/after
  • Brief tumble dry to fluff
  • Accept some stiffness (or switch to tumble)

Prevention

  • Use appropriate detergent amount
  • Ensure complete rinsing
  • Avoid fabric softener
  • Address hard water
  • Tumble dry (if possible)

When Stiffness Won't Fix

If towels remain stiff despite treatment:

  • May be poor quality
  • May be damaged
  • Consider replacement
