Stiffness in towels - a crunchy, rough texture instead of soft fluffiness - results from various causes, most of which are fixable.
Causes
Residue buildup:
- Detergent not fully rinsed
- Fabric softener coating
- Body oils accumulated
Hard water:
- Mineral deposits on fibres
- Calcium and magnesium
Drying method:
- Line drying (fibres dry matted)
- Over-drying in tumble dryer
Manufacturing:
- Sizing/finishing residue (new towels)
Solutions
For residue:
- Laundry stripping
- Hot vinegar wash
- Extra rinse cycles
- Less detergent
For hard water:
- Water softener
- Washing soda in laundry
- Vinegar rinse
For line drying:
- Shake vigorously before/after
- Brief tumble dry to fluff
- Accept some stiffness (or switch to tumble)
Prevention
- Use appropriate detergent amount
- Ensure complete rinsing
- Avoid fabric softener
- Address hard water
- Tumble dry (if possible)
