Tumble drying means drying textiles in a machine with a rotating drum and heated air. Standard method for drying towels in many households.

Advantages for Towels

  • Fluffs fibres: Tumbling action separates and lifts pile
  • Faster drying: Hours instead of a day
  • Softer result: Movement prevents fibre matting
  • Kills bacteria: Heat sanitises
  • Convenient: No weather dependence

Disadvantages

  • Energy cost: Uses significant electricity
  • Shrinkage risk: Heat can shrink cotton
  • Wear: Tumbling causes friction
  • Not available to all: Requires machine

Temperature Settings

Setting Use For
High heat White cotton towels
Medium heat Coloured cotton (safer)
Low heat Delicates, synthetics
Air/no heat Microfibre, very delicate

  • Square with circle: Tumble dry allowed
  • Dots inside: Temperature (more dots = higher heat)
  • X through: Do not tumble dry

vs Line Drying

Tumble dried towels are softer and fluffier; line dried towels may feel stiffer but last longer.
