Zero-Twist

Yarn with no twist, held together by dissolvable binder. Extremely soft but less durable.

Zero-twist (or no-twist) describes yarn where the fibres have no twist, held together instead by a water-soluble binder that dissolves during washing.

How It's Made

Standard yarn: Fibres are twisted together for strength.

Zero-twist yarn:

  1. Fibres are aligned parallel
  2. Wrapped with a water-soluble PVA (polyvinyl alcohol) thread
  3. PVA holds fibres until first wash
  4. PVA dissolves, leaving untwisted fibres

Properties

Advantages:

  • Extremely soft and fluffy
  • High absorbency (fibres swell freely)
  • Luxurious feel
  • Lightweight for their size

Disadvantages:

  • Less durable than twisted yarn
  • May pill or shed more
  • Can lose loft over time
  • Often more expensive

The Feel

Zero-twist towels feel noticeably softer and fluffier than standard towels - almost cloud-like. The untwisted fibres create more volume with less material.

Durability Trade-off

The softness comes at a cost. Without twist holding fibres together, zero-twist towels:

  • Wear faster
  • May develop thin spots
  • Don't last as long as conventional construction

They're a luxury choice prioritising feel over longevity.

  • Ring-spun - Conventional twisted yarn
  • Pile - The raised surface
  • GSM - Weight measure
