Proper care keeps towels soft, absorbent, and fresh-smelling for years. Poor care leads to stiff, musty towels that need replacing prematurely.
This guide covers everything: washing, drying, storage, and troubleshooting common problems.
The Fundamentals
Three principles govern towel care:
- Wash properly - Right temperature, right products, right load size
- Dry completely - Between uses and after washing
- Avoid buildup - No fabric softener, don't overuse detergent
Follow these and your towels will last.
Washing Towels
Frequency
- Bath towels: Every 3-4 uses
- Hand towels: Every 1-2 days
- Face cloths: After every use
- Bath mats: Weekly
Don't let bacteria populations grow too large between washes, but overwashing isn't necessary either.
Temperature
40-60°C for most towels. This range kills bacteria effectively while protecting colour and fibres.
- White towels: 60°C is fine and helps maintain brightness
- Coloured towels: 40-50°C to protect colour; occasional 60°C wash
- New coloured towels: 40°C for first few washes to prevent bleeding
Avoid 30°C for towels - it doesn't sanitise effectively.
Detergent
Use standard laundry detergent. Powder dissolves better in hot water; liquid works well at all temperatures.
Critical: Use less than you think. Excess detergent leaves residue that stiffens towels and traps bacteria. Start with slightly less than package recommendations and adjust based on results.
Load Size
Don't overload. Towels need room to move, agitate, and rinse properly. A stuffed drum means towels emerge still dirty or poorly rinsed.
Fill the drum no more than 75% full. For most machines, 4-6 bath towels is a reasonable load.
What to Avoid
Fabric softener: Coats fibres, reduces absorbency, contributes to odour. Never use it on towels. Ever.
Dryer sheets: Same problem as fabric softener.
Bleach on colours: Chlorine bleach damages coloured towels. Use oxygen bleach if brightening is needed.
Mixing with lint-producing items: Don't wash towels with fleece, new jeans, or other lint-heavy items.
Drying Towels
After Washing
Dry towels immediately after washing. Leaving them damp in the machine - even for a few hours - allows bacteria to recolonise, undoing your washing effort.
Tumble Drying
Tumble drying on medium heat is ideal for most towels:
- The tumbling action separates and fluffs fibres
- Heat kills remaining bacteria
- Towels emerge soft and fluffy
- Complete drying prevents odour
Remove promptly when finished to prevent over-drying, which can damage fibres over time.
Line Drying
Line drying is gentler on fibres and free, but requires technique:
- Shake vigorously before and after hanging - this separates fibres
- Hang spread flat with maximum airflow exposure
- Choose sunny/breezy conditions when possible
- Don't fold towels on the line
- Bring in promptly once dry; overnight dew re-moistens them
Line-dried towels often feel stiffer than tumble-dried. This is normal - the fibres are pressed flat rather than fluffed. A vigorous shake or brief tumble dry after line drying can restore softness.
What to Avoid
Drying on radiators: Creates hard, flat patches. Acceptable for quick partial drying but not ideal.
Bunching: Wet towels left bunched trap moisture and grow bacteria.
Partial drying: Never store or use towels that aren't completely dry.
Between Uses
Hanging
Hang towels so they can dry completely between uses:
- Spread flat on a rail or hook, not bunched
- Single layer - don't overlap multiple towels
- Good airflow - ventilation helps drying
- Avoid dark, enclosed spaces - inside cupboards stays damp
Bathroom Environment
Improve your bathroom's drying conditions:
- Run extractor fans during and after showering
- Open windows when practical
- Keep the bathroom door open when not in use
- Consider a heated towel rail
In persistently humid bathrooms, towels may need washing more frequently regardless of use.
Storage
Before Storing
Ensure towels are completely dry before folding and putting away. Any residual dampness creates mildew in storage.
Where to Store
- Linen cupboards with ventilation
- Open shelving (good airflow)
- Bathroom storage if the bathroom stays dry
Avoid:
- Plastic containers or bags (trap moisture)
- Tightly packed cupboards
- Damp areas
How to Fold
Fold or roll neatly. The specific method matters less than:
- Consistent sizing for stacking
- Not compressing too tightly
- Allowing some airflow
Rotation
Rotate your towel stock so all towels wear evenly. Place freshly washed towels at the bottom of the stack; take from the top.
Troubleshooting
Towels Smell Musty
Cause: Bacteria or mildew from insufficient drying.
Fix: Strip towels (hot water + borax + washing soda + detergent soak). Then improve drying between uses.
See: Why Towels Smell & How to Fix It
Towels Feel Stiff
Cause: Hard water minerals, detergent buildup, or fabric softener residue.
Fix: Strip towels to remove buildup. Reduce detergent. Use vinegar in the rinse cycle.
Towels Don't Absorb
Cause: New towels have factory coatings. Old towels have residue buildup.
Fix: For new towels, wash 2-3 times before first use. For older towels, strip to remove buildup.
Towels Shed Lint
Cause: Normal for new towels - loose fibres from manufacturing.
Fix: Wash separately for first 3-4 washes. Persistent shedding indicates poor quality.
Coloured Towels Fading
Cause: High temperature, chlorine bleach, or poor-quality dye.
Fix: Wash at lower temperature (40°C), turn inside out, avoid direct sunlight when line drying.
White Towels Yellowing
Cause: Body oils, product residue, hard water minerals.
Fix: Wash at 60°C, use oxygen bleach occasionally, strip towels, consider bluing agent.

Care by Towel Type
| Type | Wash Temp | Dry Method | Special Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bath towels | 40-60°C | Tumble or line | Standard care |
| White towels | 60°C | Tumble | Can bleach occasionally |
| Coloured towels | 40°C | Tumble low or line | Avoid direct sun |
| Microfibre | 40°C max | Low heat or air | No fabric softener ever |
| Delicate/bamboo | 30-40°C | Low heat or line | Gentle cycle |
| Bath mats | 40-60°C | Tumble or line | Rubber backing may limit options |
Extending Towel Life
- Use correct washing temperature
- Don't overload the machine
- Never use fabric softener
- Dry completely every time
- Store properly when dry
- Rotate stock for even wear
- Address problems early (don't let smell or stiffness worsen)
- Replace when towels no longer respond to treatment
With proper care, quality towels last 3-5 years. Budget towels may last only 1-2 years regardless of care.
