How to Remove Stains from Towels

Different stains need different treatments. Here's how to tackle common towel stains.

General Principles

  1. Treat stains promptly - Fresh stains are easier to remove
  2. Blot, don't rub - Rubbing spreads stains and damages fibres
  3. Test first - Test treatments on inconspicuous area
  4. Cold water first - Hot water can set protein stains

Makeup Stains

Foundation, mascara, lipstick.

Method

  1. Apply dish soap directly to stain
  2. Gently work into fabric
  3. Let sit 10-15 minutes
  4. Rinse with cold water
  5. Wash as normal

For stubborn makeup: use makeup remover or micellar water first.

Fake Tan / Self-Tanner

DHA-based tanners leave orange-brown marks.

Method

  1. Act fast (harder to remove once dry)
  2. Apply lemon juice or white vinegar
  3. Let sit 30 minutes
  4. Wash in hottest safe water
  5. Add oxygen bleach for whites

Prevention: Use designated dark towels for fake tan.

Blood Stains

Fresh Blood

  1. Rinse immediately in cold water
  2. Apply hydrogen peroxide (test first on colours)
  3. Or make paste with meat tenderiser + water
  4. Let sit 30 minutes
  5. Wash in cold water

Dried Blood

  1. Soak in cold salt water (1 tbsp salt per cup)
  2. Apply enzyme detergent paste
  3. Let sit 1 hour
  4. Wash in cold water

Never use hot water on blood - it sets the stain permanently.

Mildew Stains

Black or grey spots from mould growth.

Method

  1. Take outdoors (spores spread)
  2. Brush off loose mildew
  3. Soak in oxygen bleach solution
  4. Or apply lemon juice + salt, sun dry
  5. Wash in hot water
  6. Dry completely

For white towels: diluted chlorine bleach (test first).

Bleach Spots

Can't truly "remove" bleach spots - the dye is gone. Options:

Embrace It

  • Some people like the worn look

Dye It

  • Over-dye entire towel darker colour
  • Hides the spot

Designate

  • Move to cleaning rags

Prevention: Keep bleach away from coloured towels.

Yellow Stains / Dingy Whites

From body oils, hard water, age.

Method

  1. Soak in hot water + oxygen bleach overnight
  2. Or try laundry stripping
  3. Add 1/2 cup baking soda to wash
  4. Dry in sunlight (natural bleaching)

Rust Stains

From metal fixtures or water pipes.

Method

  1. Apply lemon juice + salt
  2. Let sit in sun for several hours
  3. Rinse
  4. Repeat if needed
  5. Wash normally

Don't use bleach on rust - it sets the stain.
