Different stains need different treatments. Here's how to tackle common towel stains.
General Principles
- Treat stains promptly - Fresh stains are easier to remove
- Blot, don't rub - Rubbing spreads stains and damages fibres
- Test first - Test treatments on inconspicuous area
- Cold water first - Hot water can set protein stains
Makeup Stains
Foundation, mascara, lipstick.
Method
- Apply dish soap directly to stain
- Gently work into fabric
- Let sit 10-15 minutes
- Rinse with cold water
- Wash as normal
For stubborn makeup: use makeup remover or micellar water first.
Fake Tan / Self-Tanner
DHA-based tanners leave orange-brown marks.
Method
- Act fast (harder to remove once dry)
- Apply lemon juice or white vinegar
- Let sit 30 minutes
- Wash in hottest safe water
- Add oxygen bleach for whites
Prevention: Use designated dark towels for fake tan.
Blood Stains
Fresh Blood
- Rinse immediately in cold water
- Apply hydrogen peroxide (test first on colours)
- Or make paste with meat tenderiser + water
- Let sit 30 minutes
- Wash in cold water
Dried Blood
- Soak in cold salt water (1 tbsp salt per cup)
- Apply enzyme detergent paste
- Let sit 1 hour
- Wash in cold water
Never use hot water on blood - it sets the stain permanently.
Mildew Stains
Black or grey spots from mould growth.
Method
- Take outdoors (spores spread)
- Brush off loose mildew
- Soak in oxygen bleach solution
- Or apply lemon juice + salt, sun dry
- Wash in hot water
- Dry completely
For white towels: diluted chlorine bleach (test first).
Bleach Spots
Can't truly "remove" bleach spots - the dye is gone. Options:
Embrace It
- Some people like the worn look
Dye It
- Over-dye entire towel darker colour
- Hides the spot
Designate
- Move to cleaning rags
Prevention: Keep bleach away from coloured towels.
Yellow Stains / Dingy Whites
From body oils, hard water, age.
Method
- Soak in hot water + oxygen bleach overnight
- Or try laundry stripping
- Add 1/2 cup baking soda to wash
- Dry in sunlight (natural bleaching)
Rust Stains
From metal fixtures or water pipes.
Method
- Apply lemon juice + salt
- Let sit in sun for several hours
- Rinse
- Repeat if needed
- Wash normally
Don't use bleach on rust - it sets the stain.
