How to Soften Stiff Towels

Stiff, scratchy towels can be restored. The approach depends on the cause.

Diagnose the Cause

Detergent buildup: Towels feel waxy or slick when wet.

Hard water deposits: Affects all laundry, white residue on dark items.

Fabric softener buildup: Used softener in the past, towels became stiff over time.

Line drying: Stiff only when line dried, fine when tumble dried.

Quick Fix: Vinegar Wash

For mild stiffness or regular maintenance.

Steps

  1. Wash towels in hot water
  2. Add 1 cup white vinegar (no detergent)
  3. Full cycle
  4. Second wash with normal detergent
  5. Tumble dry with dryer balls

Deep Fix: Baking Soda + Vinegar

For moderate buildup.

Steps

  1. First wash:
  • Hot water
  • 1/2 cup baking soda
  • No detergent
  • Full cycle
  1. Second wash:
  • Hot water
  • 1 cup white vinegar
  • No detergent
  • Full cycle
  1. Third wash:
  • Normal detergent
  • Hot water
  • Extra rinse
  1. Dry properly:
  • Tumble dry medium heat
  • Add dryer balls
  • Don't over-dry

Nuclear Option: Laundry Stripping

For severe buildup that won't shift.

See our complete stripping guide.

For Line-Dried Stiffness

If towels are only stiff when line dried:

  1. Shake vigorously before hanging
  2. Hang in breeze if possible
  3. Shake again when dry
  4. Brief tumble dry (10 min) to fluff
  5. Or accept that line-dried towels are firmer

Ongoing Prevention

To keep towels soft:

  • Use less detergent (half what you think)
  • Never use fabric softener
  • Add vinegar to rinse monthly
  • Tumble dry (even briefly after line drying)
  • Don't overload washer or dryer

When Towels Can't Be Saved

Very old towels with years of buildup may not fully recover. If multiple stripping attempts don't help, it's time for new towels.
