Gym Towels

Gym towels should be lightweight (300-400 GSM), quick-drying, and compact. Microfibre is ideal. Bring two: one for equipment (hygiene) and one for yourself. Wash after every use.

A gym towel serves two purposes: wiping sweat from yourself and wiping equipment after use. It needs to be absorbent, quick-drying, compact enough for gym bags, and washed frequently.

Size Recommendations

Size Dimensions Best For
Small 30x50cm Face/hands only
Medium 40x80cm Most gym use
Large 50x100cm Heavy sweaters, post-shower

For most people: 40x80cm is the versatile choice. Large enough to drape over equipment, small enough to fit in bags.

Material Options

Microfibre

The best choice for gym use.

Pros:

  • Lightweight and packable
  • Dries quickly between uses
  • Highly absorbent for size
  • Affordable

Cons:

  • Can develop odour if not dried/washed properly
  • Synthetic feel

Cotton Terry

Traditional option. Works but has drawbacks for gym use.

Pros:

  • Familiar feel
  • Absorbent

Cons:

  • Bulky in gym bag
  • Slow to dry
  • Heavy when sweaty

Waffle Weave Cotton

Middle ground between microfibre and terry.

Pros:

  • Lighter than terry
  • Faster drying than terry
  • Cotton feel

Cons:

  • Not as compact as microfibre
  • Still slower drying than microfibre

The Two-Towel System

Many gyms require (or strongly encourage) using your towel on equipment. The hygienic approach is two towels:

  1. Equipment towel: Place on machines, benches, mats before use. Wipe equipment after.
  2. Personal towel: Wipe your own sweat during workout.

This prevents your sweat transferring to equipment and others' sweat transferring to your personal towel.

With microfibre, two small towels barely take more space than one cotton towel.

Quick-Dry Matters

Gym towels get sweaty and stay in bags. Quick-dry properties mean:

  • Less time sitting damp (less bacteria growth)
  • Can air out between gym visits
  • Less smell development

Microfibre dries fastest. If using cotton, hang to dry as soon as you get home.

Gym Etiquette

Always bring a towel. Most gyms require it. It's basic hygiene.

Wipe equipment after use. Your sweat contains bacteria. Don't leave it for the next person.

Don't leave towels on equipment to "reserve" it. This annoys everyone.

Use the towel, not your clothes. Wiping equipment with your shirt doesn't count.

Wash after every use. Gym towels get contaminated quickly.

Care

Gym towels need more frequent washing than bathroom towels:

  • Wash after every gym session
  • Don't leave damp in bag - hang to dry immediately
  • Use sports detergent for stubborn odour
  • Wash hot (40-60°C) to kill bacteria
  • Skip fabric softener (reduces absorbency)

Microfibre gym towels last 1-2 years with frequent washing. Budget for replacement.

Features to Consider

Hanging Loop

Useful for hooks in locker rooms.

Zip Pocket

Secure keys or locker token while working out.

Two-Sided Design

Different textures on each side (e.g., smooth and textured).

Antimicrobial Treatment

Helps reduce odour between washes. Useful for gym towels specifically.

Buying Recommendations

Budget: Basic microfibre, 2-pack. Replace frequently.

Mid-range: Quality microfibre with antimicrobial treatment. Lasts longer.

Premium: Bamboo-microfibre blend or high-end sports towels. Softer feel.

For most gym-goers, budget microfibre 2-packs work fine. They're almost disposable at that price, so replacement when they get smelly isn't painful.

Summary

  • Size: 40x80cm for versatility
  • Material: Microfibre
  • Quantity: 2 (equipment + personal)
  • Care: Wash after every use, dry immediately
  • Budget: Don't overspend - they wear out quickly

A good gym towel is functional, not luxurious. It gets the job done and gets washed constantly.
