Pool Towels

Pool towels serve a specific purpose: drying off after swimming in chlorinated water. They have different requirements than beach towels or bath towels.

What Makes a Pool Towel?

Chlorine Resistance

Chlorine fades colours and degrades fibres over time. Good pool towels use:

  • Chlorine-resistant dyes
  • Durable fibre construction
  • White (can't fade) or fade-resistant colours

Quick Drying

Poolside towels get wet repeatedly and need to dry between uses. Lighter weights (400-500 GSM) often work better than heavy spa towels.

Durability

Pool towels face:

  • Chemical exposure
  • Sun exposure
  • Heavy use
  • Frequent washing

They need robust construction.

Home Pool vs Facility Pool

Home Pool Towels

  • Personal preference drives choice
  • Can use regular beach towels
  • Quality matters for longevity
  • Any style acceptable

Hotel/Facility Pool Towels

  • Distinctive style (prevents theft)
  • Industrial laundry compatible
  • Bleach-safe (usually white)
  • Standardised sizes
  • Cost-effective replacement

Many hotels use towels with woven stripes or logos specifically for pool areas - distinct from room towels.

For home pools:

  • 100% cotton or cotton-poly blend
  • 400-550 GSM
  • Choose colours you don't mind fading
  • Size: Standard beach towel (75x150cm)

For facilities:

  • Cotton-poly blend (durability)
  • 400-500 GSM (quick dry)
  • White or chlorine-resistant colours
  • Industrial laundry compatible

Care Considerations

Pool towels need extra care:

Rinse after use: Chlorine continues damaging fibres. Rinse with fresh water.

Wash frequently: Don't let chlorine sit in fabric.

Avoid fabric softener: As with all towels, but especially important for absorbency around pools.

Sun drying: UV adds to fading, but helps kill chlorine-loving bacteria.

Towel Management for Facilities

Hotels and pools face unique challenges:

  • Guests taking towels (theft)
  • Tracking towel inventory
  • Maintaining consistent stock
  • Distinguishing pool from room towels

Solutions include:

  • Different colours/styles for pool vs room
  • RFID tracking
  • Towel checkout systems
  • Credit card deposits
