Travel & Camping Towels

Travel towels are compact, quick-drying alternatives to regular towels. Microfibre dominates: packs to 1/4 the size, dries in hours not days. Look for 300-400 GSM, include a hanging loop, and bring a carry pouch.

Regular bath towels are impractical for travel: bulky, heavy, slow to dry. Travel towels solve these problems with compact, quick-drying designs that fit in backpacks and dry overnight.

Why Travel Towels Exist

Standard cotton bath towels:

  • Take up significant luggage space
  • Weigh 400-700g each
  • Take 12-24+ hours to dry
  • Stay damp and smelly in bags

Travel towels:

  • Pack to a fraction of the size
  • Weigh 100-300g
  • Dry in 1-4 hours
  • Come with storage pouches

The trade-off is feel. Travel towels don't feel like your fluffy bathroom towel. They're functional tools for drying, optimised for portability.

Material Options

Microfibre (Most Common)

Synthetic fibres (polyester/polyamide) finer than human hair. The dominant travel towel material.

Pros:

  • Packs extremely small
  • Dries very quickly (1-3 hours)
  • Lightweight
  • Good absorbency relative to size
  • Affordable

Cons:

  • "Grabby" texture some dislike
  • Doesn't feel like cotton
  • Can hold odours if not washed properly
  • Synthetic (environmental consideration)

Best for: Backpacking, hiking, hostel travel, camping

Linen

Traditional natural fibre option. Less common but has devoted fans.

Pros:

  • Natural fibre
  • Gets softer with use
  • Naturally antimicrobial
  • Dries faster than cotton
  • Lint-free

Cons:

  • More expensive
  • Stiff when new
  • Not as compact as microfibre
  • Wrinkles easily

Best for: Longer trips where natural materials matter

Turkish/Peshtemal

Flat-woven cotton, thin and quick-drying.

Pros:

  • Cotton feel
  • Quick drying for cotton
  • Doubles as sarong/blanket
  • Stylish

Cons:

  • Larger pack size than microfibre
  • Less absorbent than terry
  • Still slower than microfibre

Best for: Style-conscious travel, beach destinations

Compressed Towels

Tablets that expand when wet. Emergency/novelty option.

Pros:

  • Incredibly compact when dry
  • Useful as backup

Cons:

  • Single use (usually)
  • Low quality
  • More gimmick than solution

Best for: Emergency backup only

Size Guide

Size Packed Size Best For
Small (40x80cm) Pack of cards Face/hands, ultralight
Medium (60x120cm) Paperback book Gym, light use
Large (80x150cm) Small pouch Full body drying
XL (90x180cm) Medium pouch Beach + travel combo

For full body drying, don't go smaller than 60x120cm. Larger is more comfortable but less packable.

Key Features

Quick-Dry Capability

The main point of travel towels. Look for:

  • Microfibre material (fastest)
  • Thin construction
  • Marketing claims of "quick-dry" or specific dry times

In practice, microfibre travel towels dry in 1-3 hours with decent airflow. Hung in a bathroom overnight, they'll be dry by morning.

Hanging Loop

Essential for travel. Lets you hang the towel anywhere - hooks, branches, shower rails, door handles. Some have snap loops that attach to bags.

Carry Pouch

Most travel towels include mesh or fabric pouches. Mesh allows airflow if towel isn't fully dry. Keep the pouch - you'll use it.

Antimicrobial Treatment

Some travel towels claim antimicrobial properties. Helps reduce odour between washes. Effectiveness varies; it's a bonus, not essential.

Microfibre Quality Varies

Not all microfibre is equal. Quality indicators:

  • GSM: 300-400 is the sweet spot for travel
  • Blend: Higher polyamide content often means softer
  • Weave: Suede-feel (smooth) vs terry-feel (looped)
  • Brand reputation: Established outdoor brands typically deliver quality

Very cheap microfibre may be thin, less absorbent, and wear out quickly. Mid-range travel towels last years.

How Many to Bring

Minimalist: 1 medium/large towel. Wash and dry as you go.

Comfortable: 1 large + 1 small (face/hands). Rotate use.

Extended travel: 2 medium towels. Always have a dry one available.

Travel towels are small enough that bringing a spare isn't burdensome.

Care on the Road

  • Rinse after heavy use - removes salt, sweat, chlorine
  • Hang to dry - don't pack away damp if avoidable
  • Air out daily - prevents odour buildup
  • Hand wash weekly - soap, rinse, wring, dry
  • Machine wash when possible - hostels often have laundry

Microfibre can develop odour if not dried properly. The key is complete drying between uses.

When to Replace

Travel towels lose effectiveness over time:

  • Absorbency decreases
  • Fabric pills or thins
  • Odour persists despite washing
  • Seams fray

Quality microfibre travel towels last 2-5 years of regular use. Budget options may last only months.

Situation Best Choice
Backpacking Microfibre, medium-large
Hostel travel Microfibre, large
Business travel Microfibre, medium (backup)
Camping Microfibre, large
Beach + travel Turkish peshtemal or XL microfibre
Ultralight hiking Microfibre, small-medium

Summary

For most travellers: microfibre, 300-400 GSM, 60x120cm or larger, with hanging loop and pouch.

Accept that it won't feel like your bathroom towel. It will, however, pack small, dry fast, and do the job. That's the point.
