Lint

Loose fibres that shed from fabric. New towels shed lint initially; persistent shedding indicates poor quality.

Lint refers to loose textile fibres that separate from fabric. In towels, lint manifests as fine fibres left on skin or collected in dryer filters.

New Towel Lint

New towels shed lint because:

  • Manufacturing cuts release fibres
  • Short fibres not fully anchored
  • Factory dust and particles

This is normal for the first few washes. All terry towels produce some initial lint.

When Lint Is a Problem

Persistent heavy shedding indicates:

  • Poor quality cotton (short staple)
  • Weak yarn construction
  • Budget manufacturing

Quality towels stop shedding after 3-4 washes.

Reducing Lint

For new towels:

  • Wash separately before use
  • Wash 2-3 times before mixing with other laundry
  • Shake vigorously

General:

  • Clean dryer lint trap frequently
  • Don't overload washer/dryer
  • Use appropriate wash settings

Lint Transfer

Lint from towels can transfer to:

  • Dark clothing washed together
  • You after drying
  • Other fabrics in contact

Wash linty towels separately until shedding stops.
