Selvage

The finished edge of woven fabric running lengthwise. Prevents unravelling. Quality indicator on towels.

Selvage (also selvedge) is the finished edge of woven fabric running parallel to the warp threads. It prevents the fabric from unravelling.

On Towels

Quality towels have tight, neat selvage edges. Characteristics:

  • Tightly woven
  • Won't fray
  • Often slightly different texture
  • May include manufacturer information

Quality Indicator

Examine the selvage when buying:

  • Good: Tight, consistent, neat
  • Poor: Loose, uneven, fraying

Loose selvage suggests overall construction issues.

vs Hems

Selvage: Lengthwise edges created during weaving

Hems: Crosswise ends folded and stitched after weaving

Both should be neat and secure on quality towels.

  • Hem - Folded and stitched ends
  • Warp - Lengthwise threads
  • Weft - Crosswise threads
